This popular plant has an erect habit and stiff, sword-like, dull green or brownish-green leaves. P. tenax ‘Apricot Queen’ (±800 x 600mm), a beautiful, upright-growing flax, has yellow foliage with a green edge; its leaves turn apricot with age and cold weather. ‘Atropurpurea’ (purple flax) grows to 1.5m tall, and has the added attribute of purple foliage, making it an excellent contrast plant. ‘Pink Stripe’ is similar to ‘Atropurpurea’ but with pink-edged foliage. ‘Lineata’ (striped New Zealand flax) grows up to 2m tall. Contrasting well with the green and purple forms of the flax, it has a colourful, golden, linear variegation. ‘Platts Black’, also called ‘Rubra’ (red small-leaf flax) grows to only 400mm tall. An ideal contrast plant, it has chocolate-brown leathery leaves.
