Description
Peegee hydrangea is a large shrub or small tree from Asia that is best grown in organically rich, moist, well-drained soils in full sun to part shade. It is a vigorous grower and can reach up to 25 feet tall but can be pruned shorter to maintain a better shape. It is one of the hardiest hydrangeas and tolerates urban conditions. Prune in late winter as blooms occur on current year growth. It can be browsed by deer.
The large creamy white flower panicles can be encouraged to grow even larger by pruning the shrub to 6- 10 stems. The weight of the flowers causes the stems to arch downward. Use as a specimen, hedge or in groupings.
Relatively pest and disease-free. Leaf spot, powdery mildew, scales, mites are possible
Quick ID Hints:
- opposite serrate leaves, whorled at branch tips
- large, cone-shaped inflorescence
- stout stem, reddish-brown streaked with gray
Large upright shrub or small tree, deciduous, can grow to 10-20' high and wide although often under 10', semi-arching branches.
best grown in organically rich, medium wet, well-drained soil in partial shade, salt tolerant, intolerant of hot, dry conditions, easy to transplant
Rapid growth; somewhat coarsely textured; works well in mass or in a mixed shrub border, open woodland garden, as specimen, accent or in hedge; provides showy, late summer bloom when few others are in flower; no serious pest/disease problems; flowers on new wood so can be pruned in winter or early spring; largest inflorescences will occur on plant thinned to 5-10 primary branches.
