Agapanthus is the only genus in the subfamily Agapanthoideae of the flowering plant family Amaryllidaceae. The family is in the monocot order Asparagales. The name is derived from Greek: ἀγάπη, ἄνθος. Some species of Agapanthus are commonly known as lily of the Nile, or African lily in the UK
The African Lily comes from South Africa and occupies open grasslands and rocky places , we should therefore consider a similar situation in the garden: full sun, mineral rich soil more on the heavy side and not too wet. Many of the large evergreen species did not survive the recent very cold Winters, note the ones that loose their foliage are generally far more hardy.
